Former Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has spoken about this year’s race for the prestigious individual award, which is expected to remain wide open until the end.
The Barcelona midfielder mentioned Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé as two of the footballers he considers among the favorites to win the trophy.
“It’s fantastic that Lamine and Mbappé are considered among the best players in the world. For me, they are definitely among the favorites,” Rodri said.
However, according to Rodri, the Ballon d’Or should reward a player’s performances over an entire season rather than simply their name or reputation.
“The Ballon d’Or is awarded to the best player of the season. This year, everything is very open,” he said.
Rodri also made no secret of his personal desire to see a Spanish footballer lift the prestigious award.
“I’m a more modest person, and I would like a Spaniard to win it, whoever it may be among the six,” the midfielder concluded.
