2026 FIFA World Cup, Group F: Netherlands Give Sweden a Footballing Lesson

The Netherlands secured a commanding 5-1 victory over Sweden in the second round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, confirming their excellent form in Group F and climbing to six points.

Despite the heavy defeat, Sweden remain provisionally in second place with three points.

The match got off to a fast start, and in the fifth minute Brian Brobbey opened the scoring after being set up by Cody Gakpo, giving the Netherlands an early 1-0 lead.

The Dutch continued to dominate, and in the 17th minute Brobbey scored his second goal of the match following a precise assist from Denzel Dumfries to make it 2-0.

Sweden attempted to respond through Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak, but they were repeatedly denied by an outstanding Bart Verbruggen, who produced several excellent saves to keep the Dutch comfortably ahead.

The Netherlands effectively put the game beyond reach at the start of the second half. In the 47th minute, Gakpo made it 3-0 with a close-range finish after a swift attacking move.

Just six minutes later, Gakpo grabbed his second goal of the game and the Netherlands’ fourth with a powerful long-range strike, extending the lead to 4-0.

Sweden managed to score a consolation goal in the 59th minute when substitute Anthony Elanga finished off a fine assist from Alexander Isak to make it 4-1, offering the Scandinavians a brief moment of hope.

However, the final word belonged to the Netherlands. In the 89th minute, Crysencio Summerville sealed the emphatic 5-1 victory, capping off a dominant performance by the Dutch.
