Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy has named Luis Enrique as the ideal candidate to take charge of Manchester United if the English club decides to sack Michael Carrick.
The Red Devils are going through a difficult period in the 2026/27 season, with poor results increasing the pressure on manager Carrick. According to the figures cited in the report, United sit 13th in the Premier League table, having collected seven points from their opening seven matches.
However, McCarthy, who previously worked as an assistant coach at Manchester United during Erik ten Hag’s tenure, believes the club should give Carrick time and support to turn the situation around.
“Michael did a good job towards the end of last season. They need to back him, trust him and give him the players he wants to bring in. The players respond well to him and perform well under his guidance,” McCarthy told Sporty TV.
Nevertheless, if the club’s hierarchy decides to make a change in the dugout, current Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique would be his preferred choice.
“For me, the manager I would love to see at Manchester United is Luis Enrique. But he is not going to leave PSG. In his position, it would be crazy to walk away from what is being built there to come to Manchester United,” he said.
McCarthy stressed that one of United’s main problems over the years has been the lack of quality signings and the difficulty of maintaining consistency from one season to the next.
In his view, the club needs to improve its transfer strategy and bring in players capable of increasing competition within the squad.
“You need to recruit better and add quality to a team that has been doing well. Whenever a certain level of stability is achieved, the following season the right players are missing to increase competition and strengthen the squad,” McCarthy said.
He added that Manchester United should not become complacent with the success they have achieved but must continue investing to raise the team’s overall level.
Despite the mounting pressure, Carrick is expected to remain in charge of the team, which will face Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.
