Paris Saint-Germain have received bad news following their 4-2 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League.
Winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee and will undergo surgery.
The French club confirmed the news on Wednesday, revealing that the Georgian international sustained a serious injury during Tuesday’s clash against Barcelona.
Kvaratskhelia was injured during the match, which PSG won 4-2, and was forced off shortly before the 60th minute. His condition was a cause for concern, as the winger was unable to put weight on his leg and needed assistance to leave the pitch.
According to Reuters, the injury is expected to end his season, dealing a major blow to the reigning European champions.
Dembele and Marquinhos Also Sidelined
Kvaratskhelia was not the only player to suffer an injury during the match. PSG also lost the services of Ousmane Dembele, who was substituted in the 19th minute due to a thigh injury.
Captain and defender Marquinhos was also forced off after experiencing a similar physical problem.
The Parisian club have confirmed that both players will continue their treatment over the coming weeks.
PSG in Excellent European Form
Despite the injuries, PSG have made an impressive start to their Champions League campaign. The French side have recorded three wins from their opening three matches and currently sit at the top of the standings. However, Kvaratskhelia’s potential long-term absence represents a major concern for the manager.
Attention will now turn to the recovery of the injured players and how Luis Enrique manages his squad for the remainder of the season, as PSG aim to defend their European title.
