Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has made no secret of his ambition to lead the Parisian side to another major European triumph. After winning the Champions League in two consecutive seasons, the Spanish coach is aiming to repeat that success in the current campaign and put PSG among the select group of clubs in European football history.
So far, only Real Madrid have managed to win the competition three seasons in a row, lifting the trophy in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Under Luis Enrique’s leadership, PSG have enjoyed a successful period, winning the Champions League twice, three Ligue 1 titles and two French Cups. Despite a slow start to their domestic league campaign, the team have responded with three consecutive victories in Ligue 1.
In Europe, the Parisians also made a strong start to their campaign with a convincing 6-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava, while a crucial clash against Manchester City awaits them on Wednesday.
Luis Enrique, who recently extended his contract with the French club, admits that the new agreement has increased the pressure on him, but insists that his motivation to win more trophies remains unchanged.
“I have extended my contract, and now I am under even greater pressure to show that I am ready to continue and that I still want to win many more trophies with Paris Saint-Germain.”
The Spanish manager emphasised that their two consecutive triumphs are not a reason to slow down, but rather an additional source of motivation to pursue an achievement that, until now, has belonged exclusively to the Madrid giants.
“We have won the Champions League twice in a row, but that is no reason to stop. We are built to compete in the Champions League, and we have an additional motivation: to try to achieve something that only Real Madrid have accomplished so far. It is a special objective.”
Enrique added that, since his arrival in Paris, his goal has been to make history with the club. For him and his players, the Champions League remains the most important trophy, while the desire to keep winning is an essential part of the mentality required to compete at the highest level.
“Everyone knew that the club had already won important trophies, but for us, there was no trophy more important than the Champions League. For me as a coach, just as for the players, the desire to keep winning is an essential characteristic of competing at the highest level,” he concluded.
