Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has admitted that he regrets leaving the club in 2015, saying he would have stayed for another season if he had known that Jurgen Klopp was going to replace Brendan Rodgers.
Gerrard made the comments while speaking to an audience in Singapore, according to TNT Sports.
The former England midfielder revealed that Liverpool had offered him a one-year contract extension, but discussions at the time suggested that he would take on more of a supporting role. That ultimately prompted him to move to MLS side LA Galaxy.
The former midfielder said Klopp’s immediate arrival would have changed his decision.
He explained that he would have “taken the gamble and stayed” in an attempt to impress the German manager and earn a role in his team.
Klopp took charge of Liverpool in October 2015 and went on to lead the club to Champions League and Premier League glory.
Gerrard made 710 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 186 goals and winning eight major trophies with the club.
