Flick Gives Barcelona Fans Hope: We Can Win the Champions League

Barcelona have not won the Champions League since the 2014/15 season, but head coach Hansi Flick believes his current squad has the potential to bring the prestigious European trophy back to Camp Nou.

Flick made these comments on the eve of Barcelona’s opening Champions League match of the season, with the Catalan side set to face Feyenoord at home as they look to begin their European campaign in the best possible way.

Barcelona are also aiming to make amends for last season’s disappointment. In the 2024/25 campaign, Flick’s side were eliminated by Inter in the semi-finals, losing 7-6 on aggregate.

Luis Enrique, who recently won the Champions League twice in a row with Paris Saint-Germain, was the last coach to lead Barcelona to European glory, 11 years ago.

However, after securing their second consecutive La Liga title last season and making a perfect start to the current campaign with four straight victories, Flick hopes Barcelona can go all the way in Europe as well.

“I believe that, ultimately, the big clubs dream of this. We have the quality to win it, but the road is long.

“We have many experienced players. Everyone has a responsibility to win all the trophies.”

According to Opta’s supercomputer, Barcelona have around a 9 percent chance of winning the Champions League. Only Manchester City, with 12 percent, Bayern Munich, with 19 percent, and Arsenal, with 21 percent, are ranked ahead of the Catalan side.

The match against Feyenoord will be the 21st time Barcelona have started a Champions League campaign at home. In the previous 20 occasions, the Catalan giants have recorded 18 wins, one draw and just one defeat. Their only loss came against Bayern Munich in the 2021/22 season, when the Bavarians won 3-0.

Flick also boasts impressive Champions League statistics. Among coaches who have managed at least 10 matches in the competition, the German has the highest win percentage, at 72.7 percent, as well as the highest average number of goals per game, with three.

Since taking charge of Barcelona in 2024, the Catalan side have scored the most goals per game in the competition, averaging 2.88 goals. Across 26 matches, they have scored 75 goals.

Barcelona have also made a perfect start to the new La Liga season, winning all four of their matches. In their most recent game, the Catalans thrashed Valencia 5-0, with Fermin Lopez and Lamine Yamal putting in outstanding performances.
