Dani Carvajal, 34, is currently without a club after his contract with Real Madrid expired in June. The Spanish defender has brought his long spell in Madrid to an end and is now considering his options as he looks to continue his career at another top European club.
Despite being a free agent and able to sign for any team, Carvajal has recently been at the centre of one of the most intriguing transfer rumours.
Former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott revealed during a broadcast on TNT Sports that he had heard talks linking the Spaniard with Liverpool.
“There are talks about Liverpool and Carvajal,” Lescott said, putting the Spanish defender’s name on the radar of the English club.
Such a move could make sense for Liverpool, given the current situation at right-back. Jeremy Frimpong has not completely convinced defensively, while Conor Bradley is not expected to return until the end of the year after suffering a serious knee injury.
Under these circumstances, Liverpool have also been forced to use Ronald Araujo in that position, making the right-back area one of the positions that could require reinforcement.
Carvajal’s experience, gained over many years at the highest levels of European football, would be a valuable asset for the English side.
However, a move to Liverpool would not be straightforward, despite the fact that the player is currently without a contract.
The English club have already filled all 25 of their permitted Premier League squad places, while their quota of 17 non-homegrown players is also full. As a result, if Carvajal were to move to Anfield, he would not be able to be registered for the league immediately.
In that case, the Spaniard would have to wait until January, when Liverpool could potentially free up one of the places occupied by a non-homegrown player and then register Carvajal.
Meanwhile, Carvajal continues to train individually alongside his former teammate Joselu, while he waits for an offer that matches his ambitions.
The Spanish defender appears to have rejected the possibility of joining a lower-level league, despite receiving offers from the Middle East. His priority is to continue playing at the highest levels of European football.
Liverpool could be an ideal destination for Carvajal, but for now, it remains to be seen whether the English club can find a solution to the registration issue.
