Steven Gerrard has urged Liverpool to sign a specialist defensive midfielder before the summer transfer window closes, insisting that the No. 6 position has been “sorely missed” since Fabinho left the club in 2023.
The former Liverpool captain believes the midfield needs a genuine destroyer who can protect the defense and give the team’s more attacking players the freedom to push forward.
“There is one area that hasn’t had much focus, only in the last week since the Newcastle game. I believe they need a specialist in the No. 6 position, that’s my opinion,” Gerrard initially said. “Now, the manager may have different ideas about how he wants the team to look and his philosophy, but I think this team has been missing a destroyer, someone who holds the midfield, which is a very important part of the spine of the team, ever since they transferred Fabinho.”
“I think that position has been sorely missed. I don’t think they have a specialist in that position.”
“That could allow Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister to go and join attacks, while providing protection for the back four. I think they are really missing that position,” the Reds legend concluded.
